Who are you?

My name is Jesse Woodd, and I'm an anthropology student at university working on my final year dissertation project! I like all sorts of music and films and adore my little pet cat Evie :)

What is this study about?

My project is an online ethnography conducted primarily on TikTok. I am interested in how algorithms in digital spaces effect the community building and managing strategies of online communities. I am going to do this through the analysis of the online community of self-identified witchcraft practitioners on Tiktok (this might be you!)

Why TikTok? Why Witchcraft?

TikTok has one of the most talked about and sophisticated social media algorithms in the world, and yet there is a distinct lack of work relating to it within anthropology! Considering how many people use TikTok and find community on here it's a shame there hasn't been more focus on it.I've existed within Witchy online spaces since about 2013, and have engaged loosely with the craft on and off over the years. I always feel community within these online spaces, and am interested to hear from other members of the community about their experiences within TikTok/Witchtok.

Can I participate?

Short answer: Yes! Please do!Long answer: If you have come across this page it is likely through my TikTok bio, linked under one of my videos on Witchtok, or I have sent it to you! As long as you self identify as a witchcraft practitioner, whether you are a content creator, or just someone who casually consumes WitchTok content, I'd love for you to get involved in whatever capacity is best for you.

How to get involved:

For the easiest ways to get involved, you can fill out an anonymous survey with some basic questions. My dms are always open for random thoughts and contributions, and same for my comment section!If you are interested in doing something more in depth however, I'd love to interview members of the community! If you are interested in doing one of those, again just dm me, and we can set that up. These could either be video/audio interviews, but equally I understand how daunting that can sound, and I'm more than happy to run interviews over messages/emails, with no face-to-face or realtime interaction. Whatever is easiest and most comfortable.For ethical and safety reasons, all data collected will be anonymised, and any transcripts will be stored in an encrypted drive. Anyone participating in interviews will receive a full copy of the informed consent form, but this is also available to anybody upon request.

Can I read it after you're done?

Yes of course! Contact me after the project is finished and ask for a copy and I'll send you one :)
